Welcome to the "Plight of the Whooping Crane" you have been chosen for as very special task. Mr. Hogwaller has decided to build a hog farm backing up to the marsh land of the Aransas wildlife refuge. Conservationists are concerned that the sewer run off from the hogs will contaminate the water source and have asked for a hearing in front of the department of the interior.

Mr. Hogwaller

Your team has been asked to give a presentation at this this hearing on behalf of the whooping crane. You will proceed through a variety of websites doing research and keeping notes of your data. Finally you will present your findings in front of your class in a power point presentation to convince them that the recovery of the whooping cranes will be undermined if Mr. Hogwaller's hog farm is allowed to be built.

You teacher has divided you into teams of 3 and each of you will choose a different role to play throughout the webquest. You will be responsible for doing research in conjunction with that role.

    Roles and Duties

Biologist - Biologists study the structures, characteristics, functions, ecology and environments
of animals to increase scientific knowledge and develop practical applications in wildlife management, conservation, agriculture and medicine.

1. Define what an endangered species is
2. Find the common and scientific name of the whooping crane
3. describe the locations and habitats of the whooping crane and the purposes of habitat
4. describe feeding and breeding habits
5. describe interesting biological and behavior characteristic of the whooping crane
6. find the population of the species

Environmentalist
- Environmental scientists measure and record features of the environment and study, assess and develop methods of controlling or minimizing the harmful effects of human activity on the environment.

1. Determine what caused the decline of the population of the whooping crane
2. Describe the history behind the recovery effort of the crane.
3. Describe what if any causes (human or natural) are hampering the recovery effort of the
whooping cranes.

Conservationist
- Nature conservation is the wise management and sustainable utilization of natural renewable resources to ensure the maintenance of biotic diversity.

1. Describe organizations that have been created to protect the endangered species
